How to choose an architectural designer for your home

Architect or architectural designer, fees, portfolios and the questions to ask before you appoint anyone.

The person who designs your home shapes how you'll live for decades. Here's what to look for, and what to ask, before you appoint.

Architect or architectural designer?

'Architect' is a protected title in the UK: only people registered with the Architects Registration Board can use it. Architectural designers often specialise in a particular sector, such as residential, and are widely used for extensions, new builds and development schemes. What matters most is relevant experience and a portfolio you love.

Look for relevant work

Look for projects like yours, whether that's a large extension, a rural new build or an HMO. Ask what the brief was and how the design answered it.

Understand the fees

Ask for a fee proposal broken down by stage, so you know what you're getting at each step and can pause between stages if you need to.

Ask about planning experience

Has the designer worked with your local authority? Do they bring in planning consultants for complex cases?

Talk to past clients

Reviews and referrals tell you how a designer communicates, keeps to time and handles challenges.

Most of our work comes from referrals and recommendations. Read what our clients say, then book a free discovery meeting. Start a project.
